LION OPENS THE CAR DOOR

With a 300lb lion in the offing, the couple visiting the safari park could at least console themselves that they had the protection of their car. They watched in glee as the big cat padded up to their white Toyota. Then fascination turned to terror as the creature calmly took the rear door handle between its teeth ... and pulled it open. Crazy! Isn't it?!
For several seconds the car remained immobile as its occupants sat in stunned disbelief. Then the driver pulled away, with the lion in hot pursuit. It chased its quarry all the way to the gates, where a game warden threw a stone to shoo it back into the enclosure.
Fiuuuu! That was close!

The drama was played out at Lion Safari Park in Johannesburg, South Africa, and captured on camera by British tourist Richard Holden, who was in the car behind.

BURNS BUNNIES To Warm Swedes

In one of the more bizarre animal stories in recent memory, The Local, an English Language news site in Sweden, reports on an animal control problem in Stockholm's parks. The parks are apparently overrun with rabbits -- some of which are abandoned pets that have, of course, multiplied like rabbits. The problem is so bad that last year over 6,000 rabbits were culled from parks. It's hard to describe how they get rid of the rabbits without it sounding creepy: animal control officers troll the parks early in the morning, just as the rabbits are peaking their heads out of their little rabbit holes, and shoot them dead with rifles. Now the story gets stranger: instead of disposing of the rabbit bodies, authorities have been freezing them and shipping them to a heating facility in central Sweden where they are burned to produce energy.

Japan is Under ATTACK Again!

They were able to survive Godzilla (over and over again), but now the island of Japan is under attack by another horrifying colossal predator... the GIANT JELLYFISH! It is known as the Nomura's Jellyfish, which can weigh more the 450 lbs.and can grow up to 6 feet in diameter! It isn't indigenous to the Japanese waters, but it has been showing up in the recent years, wrecking the nets of most local fisherman.

Giant Shark Stranded on Long Island Beach

It was reported that a 20 foot long basking shark was washed ashore on the beach on New York's Long Island Beach. It appeared to have died due to some kind of illness. Basking sharks are common in the waters off Long Island. This giant washed ashore on a town beach a few miles east of Jones Beach State Park. It was told to be weighed a TON! These sharks are known as the 2nd largest fish, after the whale sharks and can grow to up to 32 feet long. They have huge mouths but these sharks aren't considered dangerous because they mainly feed on plankton. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists the giant sharks as vulnerable to extinction. Researchers have said it was very unusual for the shark to come ashore because usually they die in the ocean. The shark will be buried in nearby sand dunes on the beach.

Are Plain Colored Pups OUT? Multi Dyed IN? I Think NOT!

It was bad enough people highlighing their dog's fur in pink and painting their nails, but now pet owners in China have embraced a new grooming trend. Apparently dying your dogs fur colorful is the new it. In the town of Wuhan in central China, the Daily Mail reports said that, "Pet owners are taking their beloved dogs to grooming parlors where the poor creatures are not just given a shampoo and cut but, a full-on, multi-colored fur job!" Technicolor dreamcoats, you say? Nightmare, is more like it. Some dogs only have there ears different colors, like a hot pink or yellow. Less fortunate dogs have their entire bodies painted in all different colors, looking like an escaped circus clown or something. Has China gone mad?!
